Telling Your Story: A Narrative That Moves Your Career Forward

If you’ve been laid off or are navigating a stretch of unemployment, you may find yourself

thinking more deeply about your career and what comes next. Sometimes that reflection brings

questions like: Am I still good at what I do? Did I do something wrong? What will employers

think about this gap?

But here’s the truth: the story you tell yourself — and the one you tell others — matters far

more than the circumstances that brought you here.

In today’s job market, layoffs and career pauses are incredibly common. Most hiring managers

understand that. They’ve experienced it themselves or seen it across their organizations. What

they care about most isn’t why a role ended — it’s what you’ve accomplished, what you’ve

learned, and how you can contribute to what comes next.

That’s where your narrative comes in.

Your story should focus on your strengths, your impact, and the value you bring. Instead of

dwelling on the moment a job ended, shift the focus to the work you’re proud of: the problems

you solved, the teams you supported, and the initiatives you helped move forward.

Think about the bigger picture of your career:

 What do you do? What are you known for?

 What are your greatest success stories that you can talk about?

 What kinds of challenges do you love tackling?

 Where have you made a meaningful difference?

Your narrative is not a defense of the past. It’s a forward-looking statement about who you are

as a professional and what excites you about the future.

Employers want to understand three things: what you’ve done, how you think, and whether

you’ll thrive within their culture and team. When you share your story with confidence —

highlighting your accomplishments, your perspective, and your passion for the work — you help

them see exactly how you fit.

And remember: a career is rarely a straight line. Most of us experience unexpected turns along

the way. Those moments don’t define your story — they simply add depth to it.

What matters most is what you choose to put out into the world today.

So if you’re in the middle of a transition, take a step back and rewrite the narrative. Focus on

the value you bring. Share the work that energizes you. Talk about the impact you want to

make next.

Your story isn’t about a layoff or a gap in a résumé. It’s about who you are, what you care

about, and the contributions you’re ready to make moving forward.
