Located in the heart of the Peninsula, San Mateo is known for its vibrant downtown, strong sense of community, and cultural diversity. The city is also an employer that offers a wide range of meaningful career opportunities for professionals looking to make a direct impact in the community they serve.
During a recent Phase2Careers webinar, representatives from the San Mateo’s Human Resources team shared insights into what makes San Mateo a unique place to work and how job seekers — including experienced professionals transitioning from the private sector — can successfully pursue public sector careers.
The City of San Mateo employs approximately 550 full-time employees and another 200 per diem employees across 11 departments. Opportunities span a broad range of fields including administration, communications, public works, parks and recreation, finance, human resources, community development, library services, public safety, and risk management. In addition to full-time roles, the city also offers temporary, part-time, and project-based opportunities that can provide an excellent entry point into government work.
One of the key themes throughout the discussion was accessibility. City leaders emphasized that not all positions require advanced degrees and that relevant experience, transferable skills, volunteer work, and a willingness to learn can all help candidates stand out. For professionals over 40, this can make public sector employment an attractive next chapter, especially for those bringing leadership, project management, customer service, operations, or partnership development experience from the private sector.
The presenters also highlighted the stability and benefits often associated with public sector careers, including pension programs, paid holidays, strong health benefits, and opportunities for continuing education and professional growth. At the same time, they acknowledged that public sector work comes with a different pace and structure than many corporate environments, with greater emphasis on regulations, transparency, and community accountability.
Beyond the work itself, employees described the city’s culture as collaborative, mission-driven, and community-focused. From maintaining parks and libraries to supporting public events and infrastructure improvements, employees can see the direct impact of their work every day. Recent projects, including improvements to downtown San Mateo and expanded community programming, reflect the city’s ongoing investment in both residents and employees.
For job seekers interested in exploring opportunities with the City of San Mateo, positions are typically posted through CalOpps, as well as platforms such as GovernmentJobs.com and LinkedIn Jobs. Applicants are encouraged to tailor resumes carefully to each position and highlight measurable accomplishments, relevant projects, and transferable experience.
For professionals considering a transition into public sector work, the City of San Mateo offers more than just employment — it offers the opportunity to contribute to a thriving community while building a stable and meaningful career.
